Female participation and financial performance of microfinance institutions: Evidence from transition economies

Motivation Although female clients are the main target of most Microfinance Institutions (MFIs), male–female workforce ratio in microfinance operations is not proportionate. There a consensus that greater presence at all hierarchical levels could enhance financial performance MFIs thanks to women’s tougher commitments and better managing capacity. Purpose scarce research investigating which contribute MFIs’ performance. This study aims filling this gap by jointly analysing effect participation MFIs, relatively rare existing literature, especially microfinance. Methods approach We use data from 172 Eastern Europe Central Asian countries (EECA) for period 1996–2014. The were then analysed ordinary least squares, fixed, random effects models, along with several diagnostic tests. Findings find board members positively MFIs. literature presents these outcomes as being due women’s’ organizational monitoring techniques, more responsible loans, respectively. However, our analysis shows managers loan officers may impair some extent, possibly because they face cultural limitations safety obstacles, resulting their less persuasive effective than men, process collecting arrears payments. Policy implications Our suggests EECA context improve sustainability reconsidering choices, such operational recruitment, placing women top decision-making process.
